YOGA

Yoga means union, and through a yoga practice the yogi discovers his or her union with a greater consciousness. Hatha Yoga is the yoga of union by bodily mastery and is the most widely practiced yoga, especially in the West. HA means SUN in Sanskrit, and represents the Sun, or positive, energy in our bodies. THA means MOON in Sansrkit and represents the moon, or negative, energy in our bodies. Hatha Yoga seeks to purify the entire person through breath control and asana practice, preparing the individual for obtaining control over his or her mind. Hatha yoga is a system of asana work, or posturing, combined with breath control. Hatha Yoga can be an intense and physical practice or it can be more gentle and restorative. The Hatha Yoga classes offered at Nia NH and Yoga focus on traditional yoga asanas and the Surya Namaskara or Sun Salutation series. The classes are perfect for students beginning a yoga practice and those moving into an intermediate stage of practice. We move through the postures at a moderate pace with a focus on breathing into each asana, allowing the breath to take us deeply into each posture and our bodies. All postures can be modified to meet the needs of individual practitioners. We firmly believe that anyone can practice Yoga and we encourage students to work with their bodies in a gentle manner, using breathing, asanas, and meditation to open the body, heart, and mind.
